Entering his fourth year in office, Mayor Denis Coderre has the approval of Montrealers, according to a recent poll conducted by Mainstreet/Postmedia.

Coderre enjoys a 62-per-cent approval rating among 619 people polled this month.

The poll also found that 30 per cent disapproved of Coderre’s handling of the job, while eight per cent were not sure.

Coderre, elected mayor in 2013, also enjoys the approval of both anglophones and francophones in Montreal.

The Joliette-born politician has the approval of 64 per cent of anglos and 61 per cent of francos.

The majority of males (60 per cent) and females (64 per cent) approved of Coderre’s performance at city hall.

Coderre, 53, remains relatively popular with all voting age groups, but his highest approval rating — 70 per cent — was with the 18-34 age bracket.

His lowest approval numbers were with the 65-and-over crowd at 56 per cent.

Coderre’s overall approval rating included 29 per cent who strongly approved of his work, and 19 per cent who strongly disapproved.

Across the country, Coderre ranks fourth among Canadian mayors in terms of approval ratings.

In top spot was Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, who received a 79-per-cent approval rating. He was followed by Saskatoon’s Charlie Clark at 72 per cent and Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi, who came in third at 65 per cent.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Edmonton’s Don Iveson (58 per cent), Toronto’s John Tory (55), Regina’s Michael Fougere (54), Winnipeg’s Brian Bowman (53), Windsor’s Drew Dilkins (51) and Vancouver’s Gregor Robertson (50).

For the poll, Mainstreet surveyed 6,013 Canadians in select cities on Jan. 3-4.
